10 Tips for Summer Self-Care

10 Tips for Summer Self-Care

With record-breaking heat sweeping across the country, adopting and sticking to a self-care routine is more important than ever this summer.  You don’t need to make drastic changes, but a few tweaks to your routine can make a big difference in your overall health and mental well-being.  Here are 10 self-care practices recommended by health and wellness experts to help you be your best self this summer.

1. Socialize in person, instead of on social media

Research shows that the quality of your friendships, as well as in-person interaction are associated with an increased sense of well-being. Organizing group activities is a good way to be more present and benefit from a sense of camaraderie. Try hiking in nature, spending a day at the lake or beach with your friends, or hosting a barbecue instead of scrolling through social.

2. Explore your local farmer’s market.

Get outside, support local farmers and explore seasonal produce. A walk around the local farmers market is a great way to try new foods, discover local artisans, and incorporate healthier options into your diet.

3. Do an at-home spa day.

Taking a bubble bath (it doesn’t need to be a hot one!), using a face mask or doing a DIY manicure and pedicure are easy and affordable ways to make yourself feel cared for. A candle, CBD bath salts, essential oils, and the right playlist can help set the spa atmosphere at home.

4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!

We hear it all of the time, but don’t underestimate the true importance of avoiding dehydration. Summer heat and humidity can cause dehydration, which can be a serious detriment to your health, says Mia Finkelston, MD, the senior medical director of Amwell Medical Group based in Leonardtown, Maryland. Even low levels of chronic dehydration can make you dizzy and tired. Here’s what her hydration routine looks like: Finkelston keeps a water bottle on her bedside table, so that she can drink about 16 ounces right after she wakes up. She then aims to drink another 16 ounces before noon, and 16 ounces between noon and 5 p.m.

5. Exercise like you did when you were a kid

Annie Poirier, CSCS, the author of The Body Joyful, recommends asking yourself: “What did you do when you were a kid during the summer that you loved?” Maybe you enjoyed rollerblading, going on bike rides with friends, or hitting the local pool. Those are all things you can do as an adult!

6. Reflect and do a self-care assessment.

How did your last week go, and what can you do to make next week better? Maybe you need more social time, more sleep or a day of healthy meals and relaxation before you start your next week. At the end of each week, take time to reflect and think about how you can adjust your routine and diet, and make time for whatever you need to improve on your self-care practices.

7. Ditch the couch and relax outdoors.

Grab a blanket or lawn chair and some light summer reading reading, then set up camp on a shady patch of grass. Maybe pack a picnic and invite some friends to join you. An outdoor movie night is another great alternative to slumping into the couch at the end of the day. Check out local events for some low-key outdoor activities like nature walks or al fresco yoga.

8. Walk everywhere

Exercise doesn’t have to come in the form of an intense, exhausting, workout. Instead, it can mean simply moving and spending more time on your feet. Self-care doesn’t mean pushing yourself to the limit but rather about just doing more of what makes your body feel good. Cue up your favorite podcast or playlist and vow to walk everywhere within a one-mile radius. Just don’t forget to bring a water bottle!

9. Take a break from social media or technology.

Taking even a short break from social media, text messages, the 24-hour newsfeed and so on, can give you some much needed mental breathing room. You don’t have to take a week-long break; maybe try turning off your phone for 8 hours or deleting the Facebook app so it’s harder to get that fix.

10. Update your skincare for the season

We all want to look good at the pool, but you can get a great tan without the harmful rays of the sun (thank you, fake tanning products!), and just because you’re lathering on sunscreen and sweating more does not mean you have to suffer through acne. Prana’s CBD Acne Therapy Cream is gentle and rejuvenating after long day outside. Your skin just needs different things in the summer than it does in the winter, so update your routine accordingly. Treat yourself to a hydrating and calming face mask, use cooling tools to fight inflammation, and of course, make sure you have proper sun-care.
